Let’s say I know that mainframes exist (likely, they process my snail mail, and a fair share of monetary transactions I benefit from). I also vaguely understand that they’re different.
This article gives a good high-level overview of these valiant beasts. I’m thoroughly impressed by the concept of logical partitions, and by the z/OS operating system. Also, it’s interesting to see how a decades-old architecture has continued to progress through the times, and kept the pace with relevant developments. COBOL and Java running side by side must be a sight to behold.
