Root, Riverfolk Expansion
The Root board game is fantastic, thanks to its asymmetric nature. I had already reported on my first experience quite some time ago. There is also the Riverfolk expansion.
In the base game, there are four different factions, each with its own (sometimes intricate) dynamics. The expansion adds three more factions: an NPC that replaces one of the base game factions and enables solo as well as cooperative play; a tribe of conspiracy theory ridden lizard people (yes, that’s right); and a tribe of otters called the Riverfolk.
Because the latter are the “easier” of the two human-playable factions, the family and I brought it to the table in the first test round. It didn’t disappoint. The Riverfolk are the embodiment of open and ruthless capitalism. They sell services but will wield their economic power with their own interest in mind. The faction isn’t easy to play, but changes the game dynamics fundamentally - a great extension.

One of the factions is a tribe of cats. They are all over the place and have a very dominant nature. Their pieces and materials are mostly in orange colours. During tonight’s game, we had some professional assistance: here’s Curly studying the game situation and giving advice.
